Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support system used to treat adults and children with life-threatening cardiovascular and/or respiratory dysfunction. Acels Medical specializes in the design, fabrication, and testing of extracorporeal membrane oxygenators and centrifugal blood pumps, two of the main components of an ECMO circuit.
The function of an oxygenator is to facilitate blood oxygenation in cases of pulmonary failure, while a centrifugal blood pump facilitates the movement of blood through the extracorporeal circuit and the body. In this way, the system temporarily assists or replaces the functions of the lungs and heart.
Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO₂R) is a specialized application of ECMO, where the focus of the system is on the removal of carbon dioxide from blood rather than the supply of oxygen.
